Rock the Block 2023

On Saturday, June 24, Front Porch Alliance will co-host Rock the Block with Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. We need to sign up 50 volunteers by June 2nd!

Volunteers will assist with small home repair and landscaping projects including painting, planting, clearing leaves/debris, etc.

Needs: at least 50 volunteers age 14+; ability to bring your own safety gear and to lift +25lbs a plus

Commitment: 8:30am-3:30pm (7 hours)

Location: TBD area in the Ivanhoe Neighborhood

Minor Home Repair Crew Members

Our Minor Home Repairs Crew assists Eastside Kansas City residents with small repairs and jobs around the house. These jobs generally range from window replacements and safety gate installation to porch patching and replacement. We are looking for dedicated “handy” folks to join the crew!

Needs: 6+ volunteers able to lift ~50lbs and who feel comfortable doing basic home repair and construction

Commitment: 4-6 hours per week, Thursdays or Saturdays during the day

Community Outreach Volunteers

Front Porch Alliance began with a knock on the door and a simple question, “How can we help?” Over 20 years later, we continue this important form of community outreach through regular doorknocking and attending community events. We are seeking folks interested in connecting with their neighbors and our Eastside KC community through direct conversations about needs and programming.

Needs: 5+ volunteers capable of walking 1-2mi; bilingual a plus (Spanish, Swahili)

Commitment: 2+ hours per month

Childcare

We regularly need childcare help during our Community Classes and Parent Cafés so that parents can attend our events without worry. Interested volunteers should feel comfortable working with a group of infants and children and must be prepared to submit a background check.
Community Classes meet on Tuesday or Thursday evenings from approx. 5:30-8:00pm for seven weeks. Parent Cafés occur once monthly on the 3rd Thursday of the month from 5:30-7:00pm.

Needs: 3+ volunteers able to care for infants and youth (ages 1-10)

Commitment: 2+ hours per month

Partners Active in Learning

Mentor a Kansas City student! Partners Active in Learning (PALs) offer individual tutoring and mentorship to elementary school students. PALs help students gain confidence and skill in math and reading.

Needs: 10+ passionate, patient adults interested in mentoring youth

Commitment: 1-3 hours per week based on student need and your availability, during the school day and after school

Youth Programs Volunteer

During the school year, we run five programs both in-schools and after school. These program support student growth in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) areas and foster social and emotional skill building.

Needs:
   -Robotics Coaches
   -Shark Tank Instructors and Financial Experts
   -Our Stories General Support

Commitment: 1-3 hours per week depending on program needs and prep

General Volunteer

Interested in supporting Front Porch Alliance but aren’t sure where to start? We always need help with office work, event planning, social media, document digitization, and more.

Needs: 1+ volunteers willing to assist around the office

Commitment: 2+ hours per week

Special Skills Volunteer

Interested in supporting Front Porch Alliance with your skills or expertise? We are in search of volunteers who can assist in the below areas. If your skills are not listed, please reach out!
   -Photography and videography to assist with community storytelling, events, and social media
   -Accounting and finance
   -Spanish language interpretation and translating
  -Folks interested in running 2hr workshops on home ownership, health and wellness, reproductive rights, and etc.
  -Folks interested in running 8wk community classes on various topics as requested by the community

Needs: 1+ volunteers willing to use their skills or expertise in service

Run an art workshop!

Community-based artists, makers, and creatives are the heart and soul of our PORCH Storytellers program. Folks selected to run a workshop are compensated at $25/hr for approximately 10hrs of work with our youth participants.

Past workshop topics included:

  • Improv and other forms of comedy
  • Writing and pitching TV pilots
  • Community gardening and art installations
  • Poetry
